Tennis players head to State Meet today
The Woodlands High School Varsity Tennis Team is, once again, on their way to State for the spring season. They went to state for fall season as a team, but spring season is different from fall season in the sense that fall season is team tennis whereas spring tennis is individual. This is the team’s time going to state in the spring.
“We have put ourselves in a position to win,” said Coach Brett Kendall. “It’s possible to come back with hopefully a few medals.”
In singles, Ahona Chowdhury finished as Regional runner-up. Max Conde won third place at District for Regional alternate, and stepped up for Regionals when his teammate Nachi Gulati got injured. He won third place in boys singles, and will be an alternate for State.
“I’m ready for state,” said Chowdhurry. “I know the team will play as well as they have this whole year.”
Emilio Lopez and Jose Perez are 2023 undefeated champions in boys doubles, and kept their first place streak going at Regionals. Eli Sam and Carson Moore played Perez and Lopez in the Regional Finals, winning the second place title. This will be Moore, Lopez, Perez, and Sam’s third time at state.
“There was a lot of stress but it’s a good experience for next year,” said freshman Maryia Tryhubovich, who went to Regionals for mixed doubles with Fabio Di Loreto but did not make it to State. “Practice makes progress so I hope we win next year if Coach puts us together.”
The State Tournament will be held on April 25 and 26 in San Antonio.
