The Woodlands High School Varsity Tennis Team played College Park on Tuesday, September 12, pulling out a victory of 14-5. This is their 10th consecutive year beating CP. The Highlanders have a streak of 66 district wins. This season, they have won 7 matches and lost only one.
“When the seniors left, it was complicated at the beginning. We lost a few of our good players. We also gained good players, though, and now our girls carry,” sophomore Albany Pulido said about the new team dynamic.
The Woodlands dominated doubles, winning 5 matches and losing only 2.
“At first, I was very nervous because I didn’t want to let the team down,” sophomore Maryia Tryhubovich said after losing a tight doubles match against the number one and two College Park girls. “In the end, it all turned out great and I won my singles match!”
By the time the Highlanders began singles, they only had to secure 5 matches to win.
“It was fun, I played pretty well. The energy was good, and I could feel my teammates cheering for me,” said freshman Kendl Klinge after a 4-0/5-3 victory against College Park’s number two girl.
The JV team will play College Park later on in the season.
If both TWHS and CP make it to regionals, they may have a rematch.
“We have an amazing team ready to step up and rise to the occasion,” senior and captain Tania Aburto said. “This district match has given us confidence, and I am sure we will win against College Park if it comes to it.”
