The Woodlands High School Air Force Junior ROTC has participated in the annual Memorial Bataan Death March for several years, but this year decided their effort should benefit local veterans.
The event commemorates the forced marching if the fallen soldiers and prisoners of war by the Japanese Army on the Bataan Peninsula in The Philippines in World War II. Under incredibly harsh conditions with no food or water, prisoners risked death if they stopped.
The cadets raised money through sponsorships and completed a 14-mile hike to raise $1,100, which was donated to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4709. Cadet Logan Szulewski, Community Service Officer, made a speech and was joined by Alexis McMeans, Lily Cummings, Joshua Juno, and Alexa Kemano in the presentation to VFW Post 4709 Commander Marcey Philips.
