With the turn of a new season right around the corner, it’s about time to check up on the varsity football team. Starting at the top with the number one man, the Quarterback.
The QB position has been a pretty big question mark on the team since the departure of star player, Mabrey Mettauer, to the Wisconsin Badgers for his collegiate career. Seeing as we have yet to get a starters list, it seems we will have to wait until the opening game at Cinco Ranch this Saturday to witness who will start. However, based on the Meet the Players event this past Saturday, all three Quarterback options seem quite competent.
Now onto the broader offensive situation. Despite a strong defensive line, the offense was able to run the ball effectively. Even better news, even with playing three different quarterbacks during the scrimmage, the passing game was stellar; with the only issue being some overthrowing of receivers. Although getting separation has been a null issue, it remains to be seen if that’s an offensive feat or a defensive letdown. Speaking of defense, I mentioned earlier they held solid against a powerful run game, however the backfield struggled some against the pass; particularly against the sideline.
While more remains to be seen during these first few weeks of the season, from what we’ve seen so far, the offense seems to be in pretty good shape, but the defense has some notable work to put in.
