Are you having trouble with your college application process? Don’t worry, we’ve got you!!! Texas students can use Apply Texas for public, in-state, applications, or the Common App for both public and private colleges. The college application process can be a stressful time for high school students, but the College and Career Center (CCC) can be a helpful resource for students to receive guidance. Ms. StRomain is the lead CCC counselor. We had the opportunity to speak with her to discuss the application process.
Q: What step of the college application process do students struggle with the most?
A: “Students struggle most with writing the essay because it is different from what is written in class. It does not need to be in MLA and does not need to follow a specific format. Colleges want authenticity, be your authentic self.”
Q: What is the best piece of advice you can give to a student starting their college application process?
A: “Don’t give yourself the ‘no’, let someone else do it. Don’t let fear stop you from applying. If you get a no, someone else will give you a yes.”
Q: Is there a difference between Apply Texas and Common Application when applying for in-state public colleges?
A: “Colleges do not have a preference, but students are leaning toward Common App this year since Apply Texas is in a new, more complicated format.”
The application process consists of a multi-step checklist:
1. Make sure you have written an essay and have test scores available if you plan to apply with test scores (SAT/ACT)
2. Begin answering the questions in the written portion of your application
3. Fill out the brag sheet to request recommendation letters from your teachers and counselors
4, Fill out the FAFSA for financial aid starting October 1.
5. Complete applications before the college’s deadline.

Ms. Romain is a dedicated counselor for students and their families. I have had the pleasure of working with her in recent years, and her help and guidance are always very patient. Since the school serves families from various parts of the world, she has the necessary knowledge to guide all families through the college application process. She is always available and has a smile on her face. She is a great asset to our community!
