UNICEF, a club focused on providing humanitarian aid to children worldwide, is now a new club at The Woodlands High School. They meet in room 117 on Red Mondays.
UNICEF stands for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. It is a special program that was originally founded to provide emergency food and healthcare to children and mothers in countries that had been devastated by World War II. Now it mainly focuses on providing vaccines, safe water, sanitation, and education to children worldwide.
As for the club at the Woodlands, their goal is to provide awareness, fundraise money, and provide overall help to the UNICEF cause. The officer team includes: Co-Presidents Maya Vaidya and Grace Schillinger, Communications Officer, Claire Templet, Treasurer, Faith Schillinger, Secretary, Maisy Herman, Events Manager, Ruth Piana, and Sponsor Coordinator, Camden Engleman.
“I really enjoy giving back to the community, especially helping those in need, so when I heard that there would be a club at my school that would do that I was eager to have a role that would allow me to improve the lives of many” said club officer Claire Templet.
When asked why she thought she was chosen over the other applicants, Claire said, “I’ve volunteered with children quite a bit in the past, so my experience might have been the reason”.
The official UNICEF club requires a certain quota for donations from the UNICEF club at TWHS, so dues will be used towards that charity, as well as fundraiser’s and the club’s Compassion Project.
The Compassion Project is a year-round project that, if approved, will allow the club to donate money to a child in need to help pay for the cost of basic necessities. It represents the Club’s overarching purpose, which is to improve the life of at least one underprivileged child.
Beside the Compassion Project, another UNICEF project was collecting books for children for International Literacy Day. These projects all directly help children in need. If you’re interested in joining the UNICEF club at TWHS, please stop by room 117 on a Red Monday or contact the sponsor, Mr. Gannon.
