Voting for the TWHS Art Trust began this week and will continue until tomorrow, Nov. 14. The Art Trust was established in 2011 as a way to incorporate fine arts into the daily lives of students, foster a love for the arts, and to promote Texas artists.
The Art Trust selects different pieces of artwork from artists around Texas, and the student body gets to vote on the pieces they would like to see in the hallways of the high school. These pieces become a permanent feature of the school walls with new ones added yearly
Patti Gray, last year’s winner with the photography piece “Windows To The Soul” featuring a homeless man from New Orleans, is running again this year with another photo of the homeless population of New Orleans. “The fact that so many kids voted for him, it gave me hope that there’s compassion,” she says, “you guys have compassion. Like you saw him.”
In just thirteen years, the Art Trust has become the largest publicly displayed art collection in Montgomery County, with no signs of slowing down. This initiative is just one of the things which makes TWHS a unique and amazing place to learn and grow. Other than one school in the midwestern United States, “we’re the only other school in the nation that does it,” explains AP art teacher Hunter McLeod.
Check back in a couple weeks for The Caledonian interviews with the Art Trust winners of the selected pieces!
