After much practice, mistake-making, learning, and anticipation, Highlander wrestling kicks off this season with pre-season tournaments. In the past few years the TWHS wrestling team has grown its program, appealing to many female students. Four of these talented students are competing throughout the year; Riley Rayome, Claire Guydon, Dannie Sizelove, and Desiree Ojo.
Preseason started in Demoyne, Iowa with Claire, Riley, and Dannie competing. Riley Rayome placed 6th in the 115 lb division and Claire Guydon beat a nationally leagued wrestler.
When asked what was most exciting about the experience and the outcome, Riley explained “just to have the opportunity to compete again and have fun on competition mats.” Adding on, she enjoyed the support and getting to see how many people truly care, as well as getting to reach her goals.
For Claire, the opportunity “to compete against other states and their wrestling styles” was her favorite part of the event.
Riley explained that, although it was a tough day for her, she still showed up and showed out to compete. “I learned a lot about myself,” Riley revealed, “it was fun.”
Dannie simply enjoyed the overall experience and appreciated the opportunity. For Desiree Ojo, this was her first experience in a match; she described it as a “good experience” and that she would definitely go again.
TWHS wrestling season is just beginning, with matches going into the spring semester. You can check out a match tomorrow, Dec. 6 at Morton Ranch, or a home tournament next week, Dec. 13 and 14 at TWHS.
