Over the next two weekends, The Woodlands High School Theatre Department excitedly brings the fantastical musical tale of ‘Big Fish’ to stage.
‘Big Fish’ traces the story of a man, Will Bloom (played by Sophomore Otto Lopez), and his tense relationship with his father, Edward Bloom (played by Senior Henry Maynard). After Edward becomes ill, Will looks back at their relationship; particularly the fantastic and seemingly exaggerated stories Edward had told him throughout his life, such as befriending giants and witches. “[Will] goes back and explores the stories his father told to try to understand who the man is behind the fantastical tales,” Amelia Avedikian, a Junior and ensemble member, explains.
The whimsical elements of the story which Edward’s character’s mysticism infuses are well translated into musical theatre. “Fun dance numbers and the amount of creativity that comes with it are super exciting as a performer,” Camilia Saucedo, another Junior and dance ensemble member, said. She continues by explaining her favorite part of the musical process, the actual shows themselves. “You, like, actually have an audience and feel the magic of the audience and the magic of the show,” Camilia continues.
‘Big Fish’ is directed by theatre director Matthew Peters and stars Seniors Henry Maynard and Payton Jones and Sophomore Otto Lopez as Edward, Sandra, and Will Bloom respectively. The Woodlands High School production is being performed in the black box theatre on January 16, 17, 23, 24 at 7:30 and January 18, 25 at both 2:00 and 7:30; you can purchase tickets here, but there are very limited seats left!
