This Friday, TWHS will compete against College Park and Northbrook to get a rank placement for our district.
Powerlifting consists of weight classes ranging from 114 lbs-350 lbs. Each powerlifter will compete in three separate lifts. For each lift, they get three separate attempts. They will first complete a back squat for their highest max, then they will bench press, and finally finish off with a deadlift.
Additionally, each powerlifter receives a bench and squat suit. Both suits utilize tension in its respective muscle groups to enhance and allow its user to lift heavier weights. They are scored based on how much they lift and if they get the right amount of depth for said lift.
For that, each time a powerlifter attempts a max, a referee will stand close by to monitor the lifter and judge his/hers lift. “Make sure to pay attention to the refs” Drew West explained when he was detailing his first powerlifting meet, “I had my first two lifts not count because I wasn’t on the same timing as them.”
After all lifters have gone through each lift and been judged accordingly, score cards will be filled out and shown after a couple days. The lifters who put up the biggest numbers can then compete on the state level. Make sure to come out and support your Highlanders!
