In November of 2023, polls were taken from CISD parents, revealing their support for a five minute addition to the average school day. In exchange, students would be permitted two extra days off from school. This allows two additional four day weekends, such as the one we saw between first and second quarter of the 2024-2025 school year, as per The Courier of Montgomery County.
In a student-led poll conducted earlier this semester by the Caledonian staff, two-thirds of respondents stated displeasure with both the current and prior start times, expressing wishes for it to start later. Many stated increased struggles during the first periods of the day, as they were drowsier and more likely to sleep in the class, others noted the dangers to student health; especially noting teens’ later internal clock, claiming it against human nature. Others mentioned the risks associated with having students drive, be driven, and/or walk to school in the dark.
Aside from start times, other districts and states have made pushes to lessen the week to 4 days, allowing students more time to decompress between the stressful school week, as well as allowing for more time for students to complete homework. Others have suggested full week breaks between quarters to be standardized, adding a “Fall Break” in addition to spring and Thanksgiving breaks. However, it seems CISD is hesitant to extend the time frame of the school year, meaning we would likely have the day extended by as much as 10 minutes a day to make up for the 4 extra days off.
Despite our 2025-2026 calendar being set, we likely won’t receive more calendar or bell changes for at least another year, as they likely would rather allow the new adjustment to settle before shaking things up again.
