Are you interested in starting a business, finding networking opportunities with professionals in the business world, or becoming a more active member of your community?
If you said yes to any of these questions, then you may want to consider joining DECA. DECA (an acronym for Distributive Education Clubs of America) is a non-profit national organization whose mission, according to their website, is to prepare “emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.” The Woodlands High School DECA, with nearly 160 student members, is just one of the over 4,000 chapters in all 50 states.
So, what exactly can you expect to do if you join the Woodlands High School DECA?
DECA meets on most Thursdays in the morning before school and in the afternoon at 3:00pm; members are expected and encouraged to attend meetings so they can stay updated on upcoming DECA events and opportunities. DECA members can expect to participate in competitive events, chapter projects, leadership conferences, fundraisers, and community service.
One of the most integral parts of the Woodlands High School DECA are the competitions, which they have throughout the year. First there is District Competitions, which takes place in December/January in the Houston Area. Then there is the State Career Development Conference (CDC), which is held in February, in Texas cities like Houston, Dallas, or Fort Worth. Finally, there is the International Career Development Conference (ICDC), which takes place in April or May in major cities out of state like Anaheim, Orlando, or Atlanta.
Besides being fun, DECA can change your life for the better. DECA can help you build many important skills such as leadership, public speaking, teamwork, and professionalism. DECA can also give you an advantage in entering the business world.
“Many DECA alumni pursue careers in business, marketing, entrepreneurship, law, or healthcare administration,” DECA sponsor Kendra Meyers said. “Some have even earned DECA scholarships or been accepted into top universities with strong business programs. Several alumni have returned to mentor current members or judge competitions.”
Are you considering joining DECA, but none of your friends want to join with you?
That’s fine because DECA is a great space to make friends with similar interests to you.
“I have made a lot of friends [in DECA]. I actually joined to make friends, then I realized how much I liked business,” Sophie Wang, sophomore and two-year DECA member said when asked about her experience in DECA.
If what you heard about DECA sounds interesting, and you want to join; do not fret, joining is easy! In order to join, you need to be enrolled in a CTE course (such as business, marketing, and finance). Other than that, there are no other prerequisites. If you are a freshman, you can join too! All you need to do is fill out the membership form and pay the DECA dues.
