Oak Ridge High School’s cosmetology program is more than a class, it is a pathway to a professional career. The Woodlands High School students are able to attend this program after a vigorous application process.
Over the course of two years, students learn how to do hair, skin, and nails. After the two year course, students graduate with a state license that allows them to directly begin working in the cosmetology sector.
The Cosmetology program is competitive and requires strong grades, good attendance, and entry through a lottery system. Juniors attend the morning sessions, while seniors attend in the afternoon. This ensures they can study cosmetology without disrupting academic schedules. Students rotate between learning in the classroom and getting hands-on practice. Students are provided with everything they will need to participate in the program.
One of the highlights of the program is the senior-run salon. In their last year, students run a real salon and work with real customers. This is a great experience, allowing them to use what they’ve learned and become more confident and better at communicating with customers. The program also assists students with getting a job in the beauty industry.
“Cosmetology class has been one of the best parts of my school experience. It’s hands-on, creative, and I’ve learned so many real-world skills. I’ve grown a lot more confident, and I owe a huge thank-you to Mrs. Hasenbein for being such a supportive and inspiring teacher” Junior Madison Canon said.
The program costs $500 a year for supplies. These supplies are an investment in their future career. For the students who are excited about beauty- and eager to jumpstart their professional career, this program is a blend of opportunity and fun. Interested students should talk with their counselors to see if they are a plausible candidate.

Words cannot express how proud I am of you my beautiful granddaughter. This is a great program for students who want to be prepared to enter the workforce after graduation. I am so pleased she decided to do this.
