Towards the end of April, TWHS Health Science Department traveled to Round Rock, Texas, to compete in the HOSA State Competition. They were accompanied by Mrs.Baker, Mr. Roberts, Ms. Miller, and Mrs.Manchillas- and the team joined hundreds of students from across the state to showcase their skills.
According to their website, HOSA, formerly known as Health Occupational Students Association and now known as the Future Health Professionals is an “international career and technical student organization.” The organization is focused on preparing students for health careers through hands-on experience, competition, leadership opportunities, and community service.
All chaperones that attended the competition are educators that have had former jobs in the health field industry and know what it takes to be successful in their career.
“It takes self-discipline, understanding how to problem solve, and a genuine love and appreciation for other people.” said Mrs. Baker when asked what it takes to succeed in health careers and in HOSA.
Students competed in a wide variety of events that tested their knowledge, critical thinking, and practical skills. Events include Medical terminology, Patient Care Technician, Biotechnology, Medical Law and Ethics, Sports Medicine, and many more. The events are designed to challenge students and reflect real-world challenges in the healthcare field.
Addison May, one of TWHS HOSA’s new presidents, has advanced to second in state and will move on to nationals. She participated in the Occupational Therapy competition, which requires students to take a multiple choice over occupation therapy and patient care.
The TWHS HOSA chapter continues to grow in not only size but in skill and spirit. The students’ passion for healthcare, combined with the mentorship of teachers have proven to be a successful combination. Interested students should talk with their counselors to see if they are a fit for the Healthcare track.
