Fashion rules the world, is a powerful form of self-expression, and is influenced by many factors that can often change, but how does it differ between the United States and Japan?
The United States has a unique and diverse sense of fashion, typically influenced by social media platforms such as TikTok. Across the country, popular aesthetics vary, including minimalism, elevated casual, athleisure, and sometimes streetwear.
Trends are also relevant, stretching from Skims, a popular brand founded by Kim Kardashian, to unique forms of denim wear such as jorts, and bold patterns like leopard print. However, these crazes are not solely visible in big cities, like New York and Hollywood, but across many schools in America.
“I would say a lot of girls and guys at our school wear athletic-type clothing like leggings or shorts,” Penelope Salmatanis, a sophomore at The Woodlands High School said.
A typical outfit for the average American student appears to be simple athletic wear, stretching from leggings and a compression shirt, to shorts and a simple top.
However , clothes that provide comfort aren’t always ideal in Japan. Japan is home to the worldwide fashion capital, Tokyo, which diffuses and influences styles across the world. Tokyo is primarily known for its innovative streetwear, hence being the main style among people.
“I usually wear baggy jeans with a cute top, based on the weather,” Elizabeth Howell, a high school student in Yokosuka, Japan said.
Japanese streetwear staples usually involve very oversized clothes with bold or monotone colors. Noticeable items are baggy jeans, high-end shoes, and a striking jacket. This attire also heavily influences cities outside of Tokyo, especially American students experimenting with their style.
“The most trending item is definitely Adidas Sambas, almost everyone has a pair,” Elizabeth said.
Recently, Adidas Sambas and shoes by the Japanese brand Onitsuka Tiger (オニツカタイガー) have been trending not only across Japan, but the United States as well, known for their bright colors and sleek appearance.
The United States and Japan have extremely diverse yet unique senses of fashion, from clothes intended for comfort to fierce garments. They influence not only those around them, but students and people around the world.
