On the first day of school, one thing many people noticed was the seniors’ backpacks. Students were wearing children’s backpacks instead of their usual ones. The more you looked, the more you’d see this trend spreading around the school. It was everywhere! This latest movement seemed random and out of the blue, but where did it come from?
Well, this trend was started by the student council when they joined with the non-profit organization known as ‘Interfaith’ for kids in need of supplies and backpacks for the new school year. Senior Highlanders were encouraged to wear backpacks for the first two weeks of school, before handing them over to student council members for donations. Many photos were taken of said seniors wearing the backpacks, decorated as anything from superheroes to children’s shows to unicorns.
We asked the student body president, Kate Salsman, about her perspective on the organization. “Interfaith needed donations, and the seniors just wanted to feel like they were kids again by wearing children’s backpacks that spanned from Peppa Pig to Hello Kitty.”
When doing a headcount, there were over 600 students who donated to the organization to help kids with the need of supplies and backpacks.
Ultimately, this tradition not only is for a good cause, but also resonates with the nostalgic spirit of The Woodlands High School seniors. Whether you are in it to contribute to a meaningful cause or to relive childhood memories , participating in this senior tradition offers a fun and rewarding experience.
