Why did you move from Mexico to the US?
“I moved for better opportunities, and for a better quality of life for me and my daughter.”
How long have you been teaching?
“I have been teaching for twenty years now. I currently teach Spanish II at The Woodlands High School ninth-grade campus. I have been teaching at this campus for 8 years now, I love it here!”
Why do you teach Spanish?
“It is my native language and at the beginning I wanted to teach it because I wanted to spread my culture. Then I realized I loved teaching it because with my language- comes a little part of my culture. So I enjoy teaching it every day because I feel like I’m sharing little pieces of my country.”
Do you like teaching?
“Yes, I love teaching. I studied another career before becoming a teacher. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. Back in Mexico I worked for 7 years as an architect. I started teaching on the weekends and switched careers, I realized that this career was giving me so many beautiful moments. It’s truly something I do that gives me joy every single day. It’s like a reward system, you teach, you have fun and that day you go home super happy. The kids learned and had fun during class that day and that makes you so happy!
What is some advice you have for someone that is new to something? Either learning a new language or moving to a new place?
“I believe that whether it’s learning a new language or moving to a new place, it’s important to embrace new experiences and not be afraid to try new things. Each experience is an opportunity to learn and grow. Always keep an open mind when faced with something new; it may not align with your expectations. Different perspectives can enrich your experiences, being flexible is crucial; while it may be new for you, it might not be for others, listening to their viewpoints and advice can be incredibly valuable. Lastly, never give up and always remember your goal. Persistence and patience are key, as progress often comes in small steps.”
