The six National Merit semifinalists are, from l to r, Ella Arendes, Marissa Ruiz, Rohan Mhetar, William Juneau, Morgan McCoy and Tristan Robinson. They scored in the top 1% in the nation on the PSAT.

Six students were awarded national merit semi-finalist status based on their PSAT scores taken in October, 2019. Now, they will work on National Merit Essays to become National Merit Finalists. These semi-finalists are one-in-a-million, as National Merit takes students from “the entire junior student body from around the country” TWHS lead counselor Stacey Mosley said. Nation

These students go the extra mile, taking “prep-tests and pre-classes”, semi-finalist senior Morgan McCoy said. The other semi-finalists are Ella Arendes, William Juneau, Rohan Mhetar, Tristan Robinson, and Marissa Ruiz.

Requirements are based on a student’s PSAT score, however, the qualifying score varies from state to state and year to year. For Texas, the score to be considered as a semi-finalist was 219, two points lower than last year.

The PSAT was administered on Oct. 13 for the class of 2022, all sophomores and some freshman who elected to take the test.
