DC revives itself with “Suicide Squad”

“The Suicide Squad” is the newest DC movie by James Gunn, famous director that worked on several movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie features Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, John Cena as Peacemaker, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark and many other well known actors. The movie was released on August 6, and had an estimated budget of $85 million.

A group of supervillains are united to destroy Project Starfish, an alien Starfish that is called Starro and was kept in a laboratory and they have to destroy the lab. With a very simple plot and very interesting turns and characters, James Gunn gives all DC fans what they always wanted; to assume how wacky the characters are and use it as a characteristic to describe them. James had a vision and understood the characters he was dealing with.

I really liked that Gunn put a lot of characters in the movie. Most of them you don’t know their names, what their abilities are or why they are villains, but once the movie is over you will be able to say their names, their motivations, their characteristics and their point of view in all that is happening on the screen. He also manages to make us like the characters and care about them. Once you have your audience caring about the character, any plot or story will be important.

This movie is a cinema adventure with action, comedy, drama and a story that will make you fall for all of those genres and make it work. What is innovative about this movie is the fact that it is a superhero movie that doesn’t follow the formula of two calm acts, so the third act is a huge event. It isn’t planned to be like that, but the way the plot goes ends up with a huge third act, which is a surprising factor that makes you believe more in the story.

The comedy is truly funny and respects the character’s backgrounds. Once you put different characters together, their interaction trying to understand each other is going to be funny because they are trying to understand where the others came from and how they became part of the suicide squad.

There is no way to talk about this movie without remembering the 2016 Suicide Squad that was truly a pain for all DC fans. They were trying to pull off a huge set piece and a huge third act but they didn’t create a good plot and it didn’t work because you really have no affection for any of the 2016 characters. In the 2016 Suicide Squad, the characters are bad and thats all; there is no moral discussion or any reason why they would act the way they did. But in the 2021 Suicide Squad, the characters aren’t bad for the sake of being bad. They have a purpose and this makes all the characters way more interesting because you can agree on some points they make.

This movie is also very balanced; it has a 1970s style but not enough to make you feel in the 1970s. The movie has humor but not to the point of becoming silly. The same is true for all the other characteristics of the movie such as gore and action.

With a good plot, good characters and horrendous but good violence, “The Suicide Squad” is a huge movie for DC comics; they now have the chance to come back to market and show how that you can be different and good at the same time. It’s streaming now on HBO Max.
