This past summer, senior Drew Romo was a catcher on the 18U USA Baseball Team after a try-out held in California.

“It was a really big honor because I was on the USA Team last year and to be able to do it again was really special.” Romo said, “Being able to represent your country and knowing that people are watching back home and following along with the baseball is really cool.”

Romo, a catcher, was the only Texan chosen for the 18U National Team. The team started with games in August in California with several inter squad games including one at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.  From there, the team traveled to Taiwan and played several games against the Chinese Taipei team, winning two of three games. After that, the team went to South Korea for baseball’s World Cup. With wins against Japan, Spain, Panama and Australia, the team advanced to the Gold Medal game against Canada.

Romo had a great game against Australia.

“I had the game winning hit against Australia and got to play in the Gold Medal game,” he said, “we lost (to Chinese Taipei) but it was  still good.”

Romo had a walk off single with the bases loaded for a 2-1 victory in the Super Round of the World Baseball Softball Confederation U-18 Baseball World Cup.

Romo has been a proud member of Team USA for two years.  For him, the best part is “being able to represent your country and knowing that people are watching back home and following along with all the baseball is really good,” Romo said.

Especially important to Romo is the support of his parents.

“My parents helped me with so many things, and they made me who I am today,” Romo said.

Romo is an LSU commit for baseball.

Going forward, Romo hopes to stay focused by “not letting any moment get too big,” he said.  His goals include making it as far as he can in baseball, “hopefully to the major leagues”, but for now he’s taking it one step at a time.
