Saturday, January 31, the boy’s soccer team walked onto their home field with determination, energy, and excitement. The Woodlands took on College Park, which some consider to be their biggest rivals in the district.
As the players were introduced, the crowd did not disappoint. In the stands, parents, friends, and acquaintances of The Woodlands Highschool players were cheering louder than ever. Signs were held up, bells were ringing, and voices were cheering.
The game started, there were 40 minutes on the clock. In the first half, after a lot of back and forth movement, No. 19 Andres Diaz, stepped up and took an outstanding shot to secure the first goal of the game.
The first half of the game was over, with the highlanders in the lead 1-0.
“In our huddle I told the team, we’ve trained the whole season for this moment and it’s time to show them what we’re made of.” Captain, Nico Suarez said.
Starting the second half, the clock was set back to 40 minutes. The College Park Cavaliers came out of halftime flying, getting themselves an early goal to tie up the game.
The two teams were neck in neck, both eager to get the next point. The game continued to get heated, there were words shared by the Cavaliers, directed at the referee, and two players were given red cards.
With about one minute left in the game, #8, Suarez, assisted the game winning point, scored by, #2, Harold Taber.
There were still 30 seconds left of the game, and a slight chance for the Cavaliers to tie the game back up.
The last few seconds of the game were intense. With the fans, clutching onto their seats-and both teams playing to their best, not giving up, the final buzzer sounded.
The Woodlands Highlanders ended with the victory, 2-1 against College Park.
After a tense game, the boys gathered together and celebrated their biggest win of the season. The Highlanders are now sitting first place in districts, with a record of 5-0.
