Out of thousands of students across Texas, only 15 are selected each year as Butler Texas Young Masters, a highly competitive program led by the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Texas Cultural Trust that awards $10,000 scholarships to exceptional young artists. Among the 2026 recipients is Hana Reel, a sophomore from The Woodlands High School, recognized for her singing.
For Reel, singing has always been more than just a hobby: it’s an outlet, a passion, and now an award-winning talent gaining recognition across the state. What began as a simple love for music has grown into something much deeper, giving her a way to manage the pressures of her extremely demanding academic schedule, while also allowing her to express herself freely. Through choir and performing, she has found both confidence and a strong sense of community, turning her voice into a meaningful part of her everyday life.
“Singing really provides me with an escape from reality,” Reel said. “It helps me manage stress, and being in choir gives me a supportive environment where I can fully express myself.”
Reel’s love for singing started early; she’s been singing since the third grade. It wasn’t until eighth grade that something really clicked; that’s when choir became more than just a class, largely thanks to a teacher who encouraged her to embrace her voice. With that support, Reel began to grow more confident in her abilities.
Hana’s journey to receiving the grant began when her mom found the opportunity online. From there, Hana submitted an application, which seems simple on the surface, but is far from it. As a sophomore, she was competing against upperclassmen, who are the typical recipients of awards like this, making the recognition especially meaningful. When she got the call back from the Texas Commission on the Arts, it marked a major moment, highlighting not only her talent but the maturity and strength in her voice.
When she found out she was selected, Hana explained, “I was really happy and nervous.”
Hana admitted she’s never performed without feeling at least a little nervous at first, but she has found ways to manage it.
“Knowing that people in the audience support me makes me feel even more confident,” Reel explained.
Now that she has earned the Butler Texas Young Masters grant, even more opportunities are opening up for her. This summer, Hana plans to attend the Interlochen Summer Music Program in Michigan, and next year she hopes to participate in the Juilliard Summer Music Program.
Outside of school, Hana also competes in solo vocal competitions, primarily in classical voice. Whether performing in person, or submitting virtual recordings, she consistently challenges herself to improve. Her dedication goes beyond simply enjoying music; she approaches it with discipline and a strong desire to grow.
As Hana looks toward the future, she is excited to see where her musical journey will take her. Whether she ultimately chooses to turn her passion into a career or not, her accomplishments already speak volumes. One thing is certain: Hana Reel is a name the community will be hearing for years to come, and her journey is only just beginning.
