She walks up and gets set as the crowd’s eyes are on her. It is silent and there is pressure in the atmosphere. All of her work and practice this season came down to this one swing, a swing that could change everything.
While most students spent the weekend relaxing, one determined golfer was busy making her way through competition and then winning a championship that will be remembered for quite some time. After 10 years in the sport, every practice and lesson brought her to this moment. And this moment made her 2023 season one of the most memorable.
This astounding 12-year-old’s name is Aleah Shields-Rodipe. She had an opportunity to go to the Mack Championship; she went and ended up winning. This is one of the things she is most proud of and one of the most important things she has done. The Mack Champ is a junior-golf tournament for girls and boys. The main purpose of this event is to give junior golfers from diverse backgrounds a chance to compete at higher levels. It gives talented kids an opportunity that they otherwise wouldn’t have gotten. For Aleah she will always remember this event.
“I was really determined to win, and when I finally did, I was so happy and proud of myself for accomplishing that.”
Shields-Rodipe’s win didn’t just come out of nowhere. She had spent countless hours on the golf course, practicing swings as she pushed to improve every week.
“I practiced every single day for 11 months, sometimes up to 7 hours a day “ she reflects.
The amount of effort and dedication she puts in shows how much hard work actually does pay off. Although she had won, that wasn’t the only positive about the tournament. Aleah was able to network with other golfers that also had a passion for the sport.
“I think meeting new kids was something I enjoyed.” Aleah had said, “It made everything so much more fun.”
Although Aleah has many tournaments and experiences under her belt, she’s still not done. She wants to continue to grow as a golfer. She is determined to push her skills more and more.
“I want to keep on getting better- and competing at higher levels. I’m not even close to being done.” she added, “When I had won, I was happy but not satisfied.”
That determination continues to feed her ambitions. When she wins, it boosts her confidence, and her goals were all within reach. Each small movement on the golf course get her closer to larger goals.
“Every time I win, I want to work harder.”
With this championship already won she is ready for anything coming her way. It has made her more dedicated and confident. Aleah’s passion in golf keeps growing and her future in golf gets brighter by the day.
“I’m proud of myself, but I know I can do better so I’ll work until I meet all my goals of being a professional golfer” she added.
