This Thursday, March 5, 2026 is Big Art Day in Texas, and in my opinion, it’s one of the coolest things we do all year. Big Art Day is celebrated across the state of Texas, meaning thousands of students are making and showing art all on the same day. This year, TWHS is doing something especially creative to celebrate.
Our TWHS Art students made paper neck ties for the staff to wear on Big Art Day. Instead of just hanging posters or something typical, they designed and decorated ties out of paper. The ties are far from plain or boring, they’re full of colors, patterns, and drawings that all express the personality of the artists and the staff. It’s clear the students put in real time and effort rather than rushing through the project. With pictures and symbols representing all aspects of their teacher’s personalities.
What makes this especially meaningful is the theme, “Art Ties Us Together.” At first it might sound cheesy at first but when you think about it, the idea makes sense. Art brings people together, it isn’t just for “art kids,” it’s for everyone. Anyone can enjoy art, no matter what their beliefs or backgrounds are. Having teachers wear the ties shows that art isn’t limited to the art room; it’s part of the entire school community.
The ties were placed in staff mailboxes on Friday, so if you’re a teacher reading this, be sure to check your mailbox before Thursday. Let’s not let this beautiful artwork go unnoticed under a stack of papers. All ties were put in teacher’s boxes with a safety pin and little note attached; encouraging staff to wear them on Thursday.
School can sometimes feel repetitive, but moments like this make it feel different and not mundane. It shows that TWHS has school spirit and values creativity.
This event will also show support for all groups in the Visual Arts Department. Students put hours into their projects, competitions, and displays. Big Art Day is a chance for their work to be recognized, and if wearing paper ties for one day helps show that support, then why wouldn’t we?
So this Thursday, let’s participate. Teachers, wear those ties! And students, if you see a teacher representing our art students’ hard work, say something about it. Compliment the design, ask who made it, and be part of the moment. Big Art Day only comes around once a year, and it’s a chance for our school to join thousands of students across Texas in celebrating creativity.
