It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. From Snapchat filters to bold, bronzey makeup, 2016 was the year of fun, quirkiness, and expression. For years, most of Gen Z became accustomed to “clean girl” minimalist-inspired trends, and thought the trends of 2016 to be nothing more than cringy fads. But now, 2016 is making one of the biggest comebacks of all time.
It is not the first time that Gen Z has brought back trends from the past: Y2K, 80s street wear, 70s-inspired prints, and more styles that have aimed to revive the fun and nostalgia of the past. Now, 2016 is no exception to Gen Z’s fascination with intergenerational styles. Vibrant filters and fun makeup are coming back into style–staples of 2016 that are finding its way back into 2026.
Goodbye minimalism, hello bold! One of the biggest staples of 2016 is the makeup: bronzed looks, bold contour, colorful eyeshadow, and thick winged eyeliner. Alternatively, “clean girl” makeup was one of the biggest makeup trends of 2025, characterized by its minimal use of makeup and emphasis on natural, dewy looks. Now, Gen Z is showing off how to do real makeup by returning to an era of vibrancy and fun.
The vibrancy of 2016 was not just limited to fashion. In every superstore, party, or event, fun, upbeat music permeated the air. For instance, a notable 2016 song that is now making its mark is Zara Larsson’s song titled “Lush Life”. Now, Gen Z is rediscovering this excitement with its newest trendy “Lush Life” dance on social media platforms such as TikTok. Other famous artists such as Justin Bieber, The Chainsmokers, and more 2016 icons have received increasingly more recognition in light of the comeback.
Personally, I have always been opposed to minimalism. “Go big or go home” is my life motto. When I get the chance to express myself, I put on colorful makeup, vibrant jewelry, and maxi skirts with bold prints. So naturally, I lean toward a 2016 revival because I believe that joy should be trendy again.
If I had to describe 2025 in one word, I would choose “divided”. With Gen Z becoming more and more involved in politics, the world has felt more divided than ever. In 2026, I would love nothing more than making 2026 all about dancing instead of division. Joy instead of jealousy. Color instead of conflict. And 2016 provides just that.
