The JROTC department is preparing for a significant evaluation on March 25. Colonel Jones of Air Force Headquarters in Alabama will conduct a formal inspection to ensure the unit meets the standards imposed on it.
The inspection is a detailed check of how well the program runs, how disciplined it is, and how strong the student leadership is. The results will determine if the unit earns the Distinguished Unit with Merit Award, an award the group has won twice in the past three years.
“The visit starts with a uniform inspection held in the gym,” explained Alexa Kemano.
During this, Colonel Jones personally inspects the cadets to verify that all of the uniform components are worn correctly. This is designed to test the students’ attention to detail and adherence to Air Force grooming and dress regulations. Even small mistakes can affect their overall scores, so it really matters.
Following the formation, the cadet staff will move to a formal briefing. Using a PowerPoint presentation, student leaders will provide the inspector with an overview of the unit’s annual activities, community service initiatives, and organizational goals. This helps Colonel Jones gain a better understanding of what the unit actually does besides just what he sees that day.
Another big portion of the evaluation involves a walking tour of the JROTC complex. Following the cadet leadership, Colonel Jones will inspect the staffroom, armory, shooting range, and the logistics room. This shows how organized everything is and whether the equipment and spaces are being properly cared for.
Colonel Jones is expected to give feedback before he leaves the school at 2:35 p.m. However, the final determination of the unit’s standing rests on the official score at the end of the day. For the corps to achieve the Distinguished Unit with Merit Award, the corps must earn an overall score of 95% or higher while meeting all supplementary criteria.
For a unit that has already built a proud legacy of excellence, the upcoming inspection is not only a requirement, it’s the final step in reaffirming its standing as one of the region’s leading programs. It displays whether they can keep up the same level they’ve been known for and stay one of the top programs in the region.
