The Woodlands High School Model United Nations attended the Global Citizens Model United Nations conference, hosted at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel. Competing against thousands of other students, the TWHSMUN team won 10 individual awards and clinched a team award for Best Delegation.
GCMUN had over 4,000 attendees. The attendees are international; they travel from all over the world to participate. TWHSMUN brought 17 students, ranging from sophomores to seniors, with 10 out of the 17 winning individual awards.
MUN is an international organization dedicated to teaching students skills in international relations and mimicking those of the actual United Nations. Students involved, research a country and partake in a mock conference, acting as delegates of that assigned country.
“I would definitely recommend this club to someone who wants to get better at public speaking, and someone who is looking to make new friends, and meet new people,” Signh Sai said, a member of TWHSMUN.
Due to the appeal the group brings – like opportunities to improve public speaking, presentation, and researching skills – many people who join tend to leave more successful, well-rounded individuals than when they came. According to Courtney Leone, the club sponsor, the club consists of a wide mix of students who join the club, and many alumni go on to have illustrious careers.
Although many members join primarily for the career opportunities and skills that are offered, others are drawn to the social aspects of the club.
“I had Psychology class with Ms. Leone in my junior year, and when she started talking about the club, I became very intrigued and started going to meetings. From there, I couldn’t stop going, and the club became a huge aspect of my life,” Signh Sai said.
Most members of the club left New York with fond memories that they can look back on and with more experience for future conferences.
“The organization and the thought of being a part of something with the value of community,” Malika Muratova said.
If you are interested in joining TWHSMUN, the club meets after school on Wednesdays at LG1 or you can reach out to Mrs. Leone on the main campus.
