We’re all thinking about food, family, and definitely the week off of school coming with Thanksgiving Break right around the corner. But while we’re all dreaming of grandma’s famous peach cobbler and a well-deserved break, a lot of families in our community are wondering if they’ll have enough for a Thanksgiving meal at all. That’s where we come in.
Every year, places like the Interfaith of The Woodlands church and the Montgomery County Food Bank collect non- perishable foods to help families celebrate the holiday season without having to worry about having enough on the table. They depend on donations from people like us- students and families- to make the holiday season festive for everyone Helping out is easier than most people think. Here’s how students can help:
Bring in food donations. Canned veggies, stuffing mix, instant potatoes, gravy, and boxed desserts are always needed. You can drop them off at food drives nearby or directly at Interfaith.
Start a mini drive with your club or team. Imagine how much food we could collect if every sports team or club at TWHS brought in just a few cans each.
Volunteer. Food banks need help organizing and sorting donations to put together Thanksgiving food boxes. A few hours after school or on the weekend can make a huge difference in someone’s holiday.
Spread the word. Post about it, tell your friends—sometimes people just need a reminder that there are families in need.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of Thanksgiving break, and easy to forget that giving is what the holiday is all about. Even something as simple as a few cans of food or an hour of volunteering can give a family a reason to be thankful.
So for this Thanksgiving, let’s make the Highlander spirit radiate; not just in the halls, but throughout The Woodlands.
