As college application deadlines are approaching, seniors may feel like they’ve crossed the finish line once they’ve submitted their applications. However, the process is far from over. While hitting the submit button on those applications may bring temporary relief, there are several crucial steps students often overlook in the excitement of being done. In fact, some of the most important parts of the admission process continue after submission that can significantly impact their college prospects. By staying organized and proactive during this waiting period, students can position themselves for success and avoid unnecessary stress as they await responses.
Students should continue to check their email for application portal verification codes. Colleges often submit decisions in the portal before sending an email to let applicants know their status. There is also typically a checklist where students can keep track of what they have left to do.
“Time is a factor here. If your stuff is missing they won’t evaluate your application at all,” Kayla St. Romain, College and Career Counselor said.
St. Romain said the three most important things students need to remember to do after submitting is their transcripts, recommendation letters, and test scores. Even if some are optional, submitting those will give you the best chance possible to be accepted. Once again, keeping up with emails is necessary.
“Students need to check their email regularly to not miss out and stay up to date and not miss out on anything” Says St. Romain.
Remember, not all colleges are traditional in their application process. Colleges like Texas A&M have self-reported transcripts and according to The Texas Tribune, some universities have stopped considering the SAT all together.
With the pressure of getting recommendation letters, submitting test scores, finishing essays and on top of that managing school work, it is completely normal for students to feel overwhelmed during the college admission process. Many seniors can feel defeated and that it’s too much to handle, but there are resources to help and it is okay to ask for help.
If anything seems wrong, such as submitting something weeks ago but is it still not appearing, calling admissions is always an option! Students can even call to simply just ask for help submitting something. College admissions officers are there to help and understand how confusing the process can be. They can provide clarity on deadlines, required documents or anything else students need. Although it can seem daunting, reaching out shows that the students are taking the application process seriously.
Seniors can also take a visit to the College and Career Center, another resource to help relieve the pressure the admission process brings. The counselors in the CCC are experts on guiding students through the process. They can not only assist with practical matters like filling out applications, but they can also provide emotional support with their understanding of how stressful and overwhelming the process can be.
While the college admissions process can seem almost impossible, remember there are resources to help and the most efficient and stress free way to get through it is remaining organized. It’s okay to ask for help and take breaks. Reach out, take advantage of your resources, and make sure to take the process one step at a time.
