Massive Quantities of Pie for the Holidays!
The holiday season is upon us, and so are pies. Did you know that the most popular pie in Texas is Pecan? But is it the most popular pie for TWHS students? The Caledonian got to the bottom of this burning question. Not only was a poll conducted, but pies were tasted! Here’s the slice on the pie situation at the school.
A poll conducted on the Caledonian’s Instagram asked students what their favorite pies were. The results revealed the sweet truth. To my surprise, apple took the lead! 49% of students voted for apple pie, 30% for pumpkin, 14% for pecan, and 7% for other -among the other category were answers like cherry, strawberry, rhubarb, and peach.
In addition, big pie things were happening in Newspaper class. Fellow Caledonian staff brought in pies such as apple, blueberry, key-lime, pecan, cherry, and chocolate. I conducted a taste test on each pie, and settled upon my personal final rankings.
I found the best pie to be the key-lime, although not exactly fitting for the fall and winter season, and more of a summery pie, it was delightful. The key lime was fresh, light, and had a very distinct zing from the lime. In addition, I found the crust -although a little crumbly- to be good. It worked very well with the filling.
My next favorites would be a tie between the blueberry and the pumpkin. I am a long standing pumpkin fan, and it’s always been my favorite overall. Pumpkin is also a classic for Thanksgiving and autumn! The silky pumpkin filling and the moist crust were wonderful.
The pumpkin pie was splendid, but Caledonian editor Addison Beitler’s homemade blueberry pie was heavenly. I was in love with this pie and its juicy blueberries, delicious jelly-like filling, and buttery crust. Not to mention Addison’s wonderful little addition of the face on the crust. What a talent! Thank you Addison, you’re wonderful!
After pumpkin and blueberry, my next favorite was the chocolate pie. I found the chocolate pie to be great. Its filling was pudding like, and smooth, with a very large heaping of whipped cream. This pie differs in its more flaky, crispy crust. Chocolate pie may seem quite unusual, especially for the season, but nonetheless it was very good.
Coming in next would be the cherry pie. I love cherry pie because it always reminds me of Twin Peaks and special agent Dale Cooper – for any David Lynch fans out there. The filling, like the blueberry pie’s, was very sweet and jelly-like. However, the crust was quite average: I have nothing special to say about it. Despite the mediocre crust, the pie was still enjoyable!
According to my rankings, apple pie is second to last. I’m not the biggest fan of apple pie, and I find homemade apple pie better than store-bought. The spiced apple flavor was different and could make it a good choice for the holidays or fall! The apples were soft, as was the crust, but nothing special or amazing to me.
And last, would be the pecan. Although Texas loves pecan pie, I do not. Personally, I find it too sweet. If I were to be generous, the pecans add a nice texture, just not for me. However, some students love pecan pie. “I only really like pecan, and I’m a bit freakish so I prefer the crust.” student Mae Medina said.
To conclude, in my opinion the best pies for the season would be the obvious choices: pumpkin, apple, or pecan. All would pair well with the autumnal or winter weather, and the holidays as well.
