No team, organization, or club embodies the TWHS tradition quite like the Highsteppers. Since the opening of our school, the dance team has been a vital part of The Woodlands, continuing the spirit of excellence that defines our community.
Formed in 1976, at McCullough High School, the Highstepper organization was originally created as a nonprofit performance based organization. Kathy Harlan, founder of the Highsteppers, pioneered the unique Highstepper style by combining her backgrounds in gymnastics with synchronized swimming. Over 47 years later, the team continues to uphold this style, focusing on positive motivation and refining dance sequences to form the team we think of today.
The team’s current directors, Emily Shreve and Heather Hays, are both proud alumni of The Highsteppers from their time spent at The Woodlands High School. Their first hand experience gives them a deep understanding of the hard work and commitment required to be a part of the team. They lead with a focus of not only perfecting dance technique, but also shaping students’ lives by teaching them discipline, teamwork, and creating lasting friendships among teammates.
As Shreve explains, “Our hope is that future generations feel inspired to keep the traditions of Highsteppers alive and carry forward the hard work, dedication, and discipline that defines being a Highstepper.”
Through team building exercises, mentorship programs, and group activities, the Highsteppers create a sense of unity in our Woodlands community. Assistant Coach Emily Shreve shares one of the many ways the Highstepper officers are involved in contributing to the team.
“There are so many life skills that Highsteppers learn beyond dance. Our goal is to keep the traditions of our program alive and give Highsteppers the same experience that Mrs. Hays and I both had. Learning to work closely with others toward a shared goal builds cooperation, communication, and respect,” Shreve explains.
Over the years, they’ve become a staple in our community, working hard each year to continue the tradition of great team dance and strong personal character set by teams before them. Every practice, performance, and challenge contributes to the team maintaining the legacy of excellence seen throughout The Woodlands High School.
“Highsteppers is not just about perfecting routines, but about building confidence, supporting one another, and growing both as dancers and as people” Shreve said.
The Highsteppers continue to represent the heart of The Woodlands High School, where tradition, excellence, and teamwork come together. Through their dedication to dance and personal growth, they inspire those around them and leave a lasting legacy that extends far beyond the stage. As each new generation of Highsteppers takes the floor, they carry forward the pride, discipline, and spirit that have defined this remarkable team for decades.

Please spell Highsteppers consistently. It’s one word and it always capitalized.
