The Woodlands, Texas – For this holiday season, the Lady Highlanders basketball team kicks off strong by giving back to the local community. Before their scheduled scrimmage on November fourth, the team gathered in the TWHS gym for a meaningful team bonding event. Decorating Thanksgiving bags and writing heartfelt messages for senior citizens.
Each player takes pride in adding their own personal touch to each bag, from festive drawings to words of encouragement. Thanks to their efforts, the team filled 60 Thanksgiving dinner bags, which were delivered to homebound seniors within the community. This not only allowed the lady highlanders to impact their community but also each other, making the holidays brighter.
“I thought it was a lot of fun,“ said senior Caelyn Hoffman. “It was exciting knowing that cards and bags were going to make people in our community happy and help them have a special holiday.” Hoffman also encouraged others to get involved. “To give back to the community this holiday season, people can donate food or clothing if they are able, but even just kind words or making a card for someone to smile.”
Making this event possible was head coach, Ashley Davis. Her mindset was to help the community around her and teach her players to have compassion for others.
“We are always looking for opportunities to give back to the community,” Davis explained. “I reached out to our parents at the beginning of the school year. Mrs. Seifert suggested the Meals on Wheels program. This was such a successful and meaningful event that we definitely plan to make it a team bonding/service event each year, moving forward.”
Davis provides other ideas that students can do to help their community this holiday season.
“The Meals on Wheels program is just one; the food pantries are always looking for volunteers, and many clubs at the school are hosting food drives and toy drives to help provide for needy families for the holidays,” she said.
The Lady Highlanders’ act of service for the community shows that small acts of kindness can go a long way and inspire both the teams and the community during the season of giving.
